Fun events occur frequently in Yurihama. This page introduces a few must-see events. The times listed in this webpage are current as of 2009, but are subject to change.
Summer Festivals
Suigo [lakeside] Festival, Hawai Festival, Hawai Onsen Festival, Tomari Festival
Fireworks light up the night sky constantly during the end of July. These festivals draw massive crowds, and feature performances, food, and fun. Come enjoy these exciting summer events.
Hawaiian Festival-Hawai'i in Yurihama
Each year, hula halaus (groups) come from all over Japan to perform in this massive event. Famous musicians and hula halaus come from Yurihama's sister city, the County of Hawai'i, to perform and teach hula to eager students. The Hawaiian Festival's popularity increases every year. The festival in 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of this amazing event, which usually takes place during the first weekend of July.
Dragon Canoe Races
In the beginning of August, teams of ten race dragon canoes in Lake Togo. Hundreds of people compete in this all-day event.
Ground Golf Tournament at the Birthplace of Ground Golf
On the second Sunday of June, a tournament takes place at Shiokaze no Oka Tomari, the birthplace of the sport "ground golf." Watch people competing in this croquet-like sport on this beautiful hill, which overlooks the sparkling blue ocean.
Processions
In October, several local shrines, such as the Shitori Shrine and the Minato Shrine, hold festivals where a portable shrine is carried throughout the neighborhood. The shrine is accompanied by a danjiri, which is carried by younger men, and other processions. Each festival has its own meaning and is an important event for the neighborhood.
Kannon Festival
Takes place in April near the Chinese garden, Enchoen. The temple bustles with activity, and people from all over town come to pay their respects and enjoy the festival.
Other Events
Beautiful cherry blossoms bloom throughout town in Spring. The Aloha Hall often features live performances. There are sports festivals, and a variety of events happening year round.
